Munich to Vienna December 2019
This page is devoted to the places and sites we saw along the way of our tour. Rolinka exercised discretion along the way to stop at places of interest. Neuschwanstein Castle was part of our itinerary and I included it on this page because the castle visit was between Munich and Salzburg. Our visit to the Abbey Melk is here too. Melk is located between Hallstatt and Vienna.
Not on the itinerary, but along the way to the Neuschwanstein Castle, Rolinka had Vlad, our bus driver, make a stop at the Wallfahrstskircher zum GegeiBelten Heiland. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The church is incredibly beautiful, especially walking the grounds with the bells tolling in the background.
Neuschwanstein Castle. Due to snow and icy conditions, most of the castle grounds were closed to visitors, but the road up the hill to the castle was open and provided stunning views of the castle and the valley. The white building against the snow and frost made it appear even more like a fairy tale castle.
After touring Neuschwanstein Castle, we loaded back on the bus. We made a surprise stop at the Christmas market in Bad Tolz. What a cool little Bavarian town. I really enjoyed the stops along the way to break up the bus trip and be able to experience local places.
On the way to Hallstatt, Rolinka had scheduled a visit to an organic cheese farm, Furstenhof, located in the Salzburg region.
Stunning views of the Alps and meadows added to the experience of the farm visit.
The farm has a cheese shop where we were able to sample its products-Yum!
After our raucous night at the Krampus Run, we left Hallstatt and headed to Vienna. A tour highlight along the way was a visit to the Melk Abbey.
The Abbey is huge and historic. Pictures were not allowed in most places. I highly encourage you to visit the Abbey's website to see how incredibly beautiful the church and library are. The library contains volumes of historic books, some of which date back 1000 years.
The visit to the Abbey and Melk surpassed my expectations.
The Abbey is active with its school. Here are some students waving hello to us!
